WHAT IS THE MATCHBOOK COFFEE PROJECT?

The Matchbook Coffee Project pushes the creative bounds of roasters to produce exciting and highly personal coffees. Our intention is to spotlight roasters by allowing them free reign over a coffee—not just through how the coffee roasted, but how the coffee is presented. Roasters will design logos, pick their own merchandise, and have complete say over how they want to communicate their coffee with their audience. Roasting is a highly technical and skilled profession, and through this project we hope to showcase both the unique abilities and tenacious determination each roaster has shown their craft.

We drew inspiration for this project from our favorite indie record labels. As a group of coffee enthusiasts and roasting professionals, we wanted to provide a platform to produce work from our favorite roasters. Once a month we will pick a roaster that we admire and respect, and let them a choose a coffee to roast however they want. They will also get to decide how their coffee will be presented—through posters, pins, a cool logo, anything. Think of this as us producing the solo work of your favorite band’s drummer or bassist. This is a chance for individual roasters to communicate their distinctive approach to coffee.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  1. Each month, we pick a roaster and ask them to choose, roast, and design material for a coffee.
  2. Matchbook will purchase the green coffee and give roasters the tools and resources to put together an awesome coffee package. Roasters have complete creative control and can utilize whatever they would like to make their coffee come together.
  3. We will announce the roaster and begin taking orders. Coffees will be roasted and shipped two weeks later.
  4. Throughout the month we will work with roasters to promote their coffee and offer opportunities to showcase their stuff. Like a record release, we want to help our roasters get the word out and make their coffees accessible and available to as many people as we can.

    HOW DO WE PICK OUR ROASTERS?

    We pick roasters based on their amazing roasting talent and love for the craft. We want to represent a variety of roasting styles, but we also want to showcase a wide range of roasters and highlight their stories. Roasting is highly personal and yet obscured by the singularity of the job--it’s just you and the beans together for hours at a time, and we want to shed light on the processes and approaches different roasters take. We hope to share that through a wide variety of roasters.
